Gopalpur Port, bulk Terminal - India : an ACCROPODE™ II project
Gopalpur Port, bulk Terminal - India
AFCONS Infrastructures Limited has been appointed by Gopalpur Ports Limited (GPL) as contractor for the engineering and construction at the Gopalpur port, located in the state of Odisha, India. The project includes the rehabilitation of a rubble-mound breakwater using ACCROPODE™ II armour units.
The all-weather port of Gopalpur was initially opened to commercial traffic in March 2013. However, in October of the same year, it was heavily affected by the cyclonic storm Phialin, which disrupted the north breakwater armour layer and largely damaged the entire length of the main south breakwater. In this regard, the rehabilitation project for these two structures includes its protection by new natural and artificial armour layers. The most exposed parts is protected with around 11 000 ACCROPODE™ II units of 8,0 m3 and 10,0 m3, which is the equivalent of nearly 90 000 m3 of concrete.
CLI developed a great understanding of the Contractor’s needs and applied a problem-solving mindset to this specific project.
Special features of the project
Due to a very low underwater visibility, the placement of the ACCROPODE™ II units was performed with a crane equipped with an Echoscope™ control system.
hydraulic conditions
- Total length of ACCROPODE™ II armour:
1 630 m - Max. seabed depth (toe): - 10.41 m MLWS
- Top of the crest: + 11.00 m MLWS
- Design wave Hs: 6.50 mm; Tp: 10s
Construction Aspect
Several cyclonic events (10 extreme storms during 12 years) have affected the execution of the project. The casting of ACCROPODE™ II armour units took place between January 2018 and October 2019. Placing began in January 2019 and was completed by the end of 2022.
